SA105 And Comparison With Chinese Standards: Application Guide

Dec 19, 2025

In the selection of materials for industrial piping and components, understanding the correspondence between international and domestic material grades, as well as their appropriate applications, is essential. This article uses SA105 as an example to analyze its relationship with Chinese standard materials and provide practical guidance, helping engineers make informed decisions.

1. Material Grades and Typical Applications

SA105 is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifically for carbon steel forgings used in piping components. In the Chinese GB system, there is no single exact equivalent to A105; however, its material properties closely resemble domestic 20# steel.

In the Chinese standard system, materials such as Q234, Q345, and Q355 are primarily used in structural engineering, while Q345R is specifically designed for pressure vessels. Therefore, material selection should not rely solely on the grade but must also consider the component's intended use and operating conditions.

2. Comparison Between SA105 and Chinese Standard Materials
  • Chemical Composition: SA105 is a low-carbon steel with a chemical composition largely consistent with 20# steel.
  • Mechanical Properties: SA105 exhibits mechanical performance between 20# steel and 16Mn (Q355).
  • Application Range: 20# steel is generally used for structural parts or mechanical components under moderate conditions where transmission requirements are not critical. Based on the intended application, it is incorrect to assume SA105 is equivalent to 20# steel.

3. Piping and Valve Applications

According to GB/T 12228-2006 "General Valves – Technical Conditions for Carbon Steel Forgings", A105 is directly referenced as a standard choice for carbon steel valve forgings. In practice, A105 is widely available on the market.

For components manufactured from SA105 (e.g., flanges, elbows), material selection should be guided by specific technical requirements such as pipe pressure ratings:

  • Non-critical locations or low-pressure environments: 20# forged steel may be used as a substitute for A105.
  • High-pressure, high-temperature, or stringent operating conditions: strict adherence to A105 or GB/T 12228 standards is recommended.
  • High-pressure piping systems: selection between 20# forged steel and 16Mn (Q355) should be made based on the specific type of pi
4. Conclusion and Recommendations

Relying solely on material grades when comparing international and domestic standards may lead to incorrect selection. Engineers should consider the component's operating conditions, functional requirements, and relevant standards to make informed choices. Although SA105 is similar to 20# steel, the material selection strategy must be adapted to different pressure and temperature conditions to ensure the safety and reliability of piping systems and components.
